Fumigant, Insecticide or Rodenticide: Choosing the Right Product
Using the right type of product for the problem is the first step to safe, effective pest control. Here is how the main categories differ.
Fumigants: insects in stored commodities
Fumigants such as aluminium phosphide release a gas that penetrates bags, stacks and storage structures to control insects in stored grain, pulses and other commodities. They are restricted-use products, applied by licensed operators under gas-tight covers. Choose a fumigant when the problem is insects in stored produce or storage spaces.
Insecticides and termiticides: insects on crops and in structures
Insecticides control insect pests on crops when applied as the label directs, and termiticides protect buildings and wooden structures from termites. Choose these when the pest is on growing crops or in a structure, and check that the crop or situation is listed on the label.
Rodenticides: rats and field rodents
Rodenticides such as zinc phosphide baits control rats and field rodents in fields, stores and premises. Choose these when rodents are the problem, and plan safe bait placement before you buy.
Herbicides: weeds
Herbicides control weeds that compete with crops. Non-selective herbicides affect all green plants they touch, so they must be applied carefully as the label directs.

How do I know a product is approved for my use?
Check the label and leaflet approved by the CIB&RC. They list the crops, commodities, pests, doses and safety precautions the product is registered for.
