Safe Handling and Storage of Aluminium Phosphide Fumigants
Aluminium phosphide tablets, pellets and pouches release phosphine gas when they meet moisture in the air. Phosphine is what protects stored grain from insects, and it is also highly toxic to people and animals. Safe use comes down to three things: the right people, the right place and the right storage.
Who should use it
Aluminium phosphide is a restricted-use fumigant. Fumigation should be carried out only by trained, licensed fumigation operators who have the correct protective equipment and gas detection tools, and who follow the label and leaflet approved by the CIB&RC.
Never use it in homes
- Never use aluminium phosphide inside houses, living quarters or any occupied building.
- Never keep it in kitchens, bedrooms or anywhere near food, feed or drinking water.
- Never use it to treat clothes, bedding or household items.
Storage
- Keep it in the original, tightly closed container with the label intact.
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store that is locked and marked with a warning sign.
- Keep it away from water, damp floors, acids, food, feed and fertilisers.
- Keep it out of reach of children and unauthorised people.
- Do not smoke, light fires or use naked flames near it.
Opening and handling
- Open containers only outdoors or in a well-ventilated place, away from your face, and never in rain or very humid conditions.
- Wear the protective equipment listed on the label, including gloves, and use the respirator the label specifies.
- Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling, and wash hands and face thoroughly afterwards.
- Close part-used containers tightly straight away; do not leave tablets exposed to air.
During and after fumigation
- Seal the stack, store or structure under gas-proof covers as the label directs, and post clear warning signs on all entrances.
- Keep people and animals out of the area for the whole exposure period.
- Aerate thoroughly afterwards and confirm with gas detection that the area is safe before anyone re-enters.
- Collect and dispose of spent residues exactly as the label directs, away from water sources.
Transport
- Carry it only in its original sealed container, separate from food, feed and passengers.
- Keep the label and leaflet with the product.

Article FAQ
Can aluminium phosphide be used to protect grain stored at home?
No. It should never be used inside homes or occupied buildings. Fumigation of stored commodities should be done only by trained, licensed operators following the approved label.
Is the smell a reliable warning sign?
No. Phosphine can have a garlic- or carbide-like smell, but harmful levels may be present without a noticeable odour. Use proper gas detection before entering a fumigated area.
